Just over 8 percent of the world’s population is over 65 years old — 617 million people. By 2050, the elderly population is projected to rise to 17 percent of the global population.1 However, the average life expectancy is also expected to rise by nearly eight years, to 76.2 years rather than 68.6 in 2015.2 In Japan, over a quarter of the population is over the age of 65,3 and in Italy 22.4 percent of the population is over the age of 65.4 Greece also has the third highest aging population, with 21.4 percent of the population over 65.5 The United Nations created the United Nations Principles for Older Persons in 1991, an act comprised of 18 protections for the elderly around the world.6
