Lend a Helping Hand
(LAHH)
Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service
program provides much needed stress relief for breast
cancer patients and their families confronting diagnosis
and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and
radiation. In Spring 2007, the BBCC expanded the
LAHH program to include Babylon Township women
undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological
cancers.
• Services offered: house cleaning, transportation
to/from medical appointments, financial assistance,
child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and
more.
• Volunteers set up services and appointments and
maintain regular contact to provide support and
referrals.
To date, LAHH has provided over $673,868 in
services to more than 920 patients.
Scholarships
The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township
high school seniors who have had a parent or legal
guardian with a personal breast and/or gynecological
cancer history. Since 2004, $91,000 worth of
scholarship money has been awarded to eligible
students wishing to further their education.
Patient Support
BBCC provides an advocate to accompany a patient
to the surgeon, oncologist or mammography
appointment, providing a second set of ears,
support and insightful questions.
Gift of Health
& Inspiration
The Gift of Health and Inspiration is a two part program that
includes a free tote bag which is designed to be a supportive
companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient.
The tote bag is filled with various items to assist patients heal
emotionally and physically. Items include:
• Books containing important referral and cancer related
information, note cards, a journal and pen
• Free coupon for a facial or a reflexology session
• Personal beauty, hygiene and comfort items for
post-surgical patients
To date, more than 4,500 bags have been provided,
at a cost of $180,758
As a follow-up, the program also includes a Survivor Package
which is a celebration signifying the end of a patient's active
treatment. The package includes a survivor book, ribbon car
magnet, key chain and a free foot reflexology session coupon.
SOS
In 2004, the BBCC introduced SOS, a program dedicated to
help those who have lost a loved one residing in Babylon
Township to breast or gynecological cancer. SOS offers
services such as financial assistance with funeral expenses,
child care expenses, prepared food and house cleaning. To
date, over $65,780 has been provided to surviving family
members.
Be Smart About
Your Health
Created in 2007, Be Smart About Your Health is a program
of various in-school workshops designed for students in
kindergarten through 6 emphasizing the possible link
between the environment and personal health. The
workshops, through a combination of visual aids, games
and experiments empower students to be more conscious
about healthier practices and products. Presentations are
available for large and small groups.
Funding Breast &
Gynecological Research
The BBCC has donated to various breast cancer projects.
Donations have been distributed to:
• Columbia School of Medicine - Long Island Breast Cancer
Study Project
• Mt. Sinai School of Medicine - various breast cancer-related
projects
• Silent Spring Institute — environmental research involving
water sampling and contaminates
• Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory – various breast cancer
related projects.
• Tufts University - the breast cancer research of Dr. Ana Soto
• Cleveland Clinic—research on breast cancer vaccine
• Lymphatic Research Foundation - for research specific to
Lymphedema
• Stony Brook Foundation – various breast and gynecological
cancer related projects.
• To date, research donations have totaled over $189,500
Fundraising
The BBCC raises money through contributions and the
sponsoring of a variety of charity events such as the popular
"Chefs for a Cause," a food-tasting extravaganza.
Other events have also benefited the BBCC, including the
Tanger Outlets at the Arches 5K Run/Walk.
The help and generosity of local restaurants, community
merchants, elected officials and the wonderful residents from
the Town of Babylon and beyond have also ensured that the
BBCC continues its important work.
Quarterly Newsletter
The BBCC has published an informative newsletter
since 1994, with current distribution to more than
3,000 homes within the community and beyond,
spending over $136,850 since its first issue.
Pink Ribbon Physical
Training Program
This exercise program is designed to help women
regain flexibility, stamina and strength following
breast surgery and/or cancer treatment. Clients meet
with trained exercise physiologists for 8 one-on-one
personal training sessions to address their specific
physical goals and issues. Pink Ribbon is available
to clients up to one year post-treatment.
Vision of Hope Garden
A beautiful contemplative space with lovely landscaping,
sculptures, benches and a pink ribbon-shaped path paved
with engraved red bricks in memory of or in honor of
someone who has battled breast cancer. A connector
pathway which connects the pink ribbon path and the
newly expanded O-shaped path paved with engraved grey
bricks in memory of or in honor of someone who has
battled gynecological cancer. The garden is located on the
southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst.
Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost
of $50 each.
Volunteers
The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily
through volunteers. They are the backbone of the
Coalition. Volunteers are not paid for their work, not
because it is worthless, but because it is priceless!
