Our Mission

The Children & Nature Network is leading the movement to connect all children, their families and communities to nature through innovative ideas, evidence-based resources and tools, broad-based collaboration and support of grassroots leadership.

Who We Are

History After the publication of “Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder” in 2005, author Richard Louv and others co-founded the Children & Nature Network, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to fuel the worldwide grassroots movement to reconnect children with nature. By investing in local grassroots leaders, we are inspiring and supporting them to take action to create a future in which all children play, learn and grow with nature in their everyday lives. In 2014, our support was provided to 369 grassroots campaigns worldwide that collectively connected more than 3.5 million children to nature experiences in 48 states & 12 nations. Co-Founders Richard Louv, Cheryl Charles, Martha Farrell Erickson, Martin LeBlanc, Michael Pertschuk and Amy Pertschuk came together in 2006 to co-found the Children & Nature Network. With them, they brought a substantial set of accomplishments and a shared vision for an international children and nature movement focused on education, urban design, architecture, conservation, public health and many other disciplines. C&NN co-founders are the recipients of numerous awards and recognition for their research, leadership, journalism, educational program development and entrepreneurship.
