Our Mission

Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR) rescues, rehabilitates, and adopts horses out to forever homes. We support individuals in the community through educational programs, referral services, financial assistance, and accepting necessary surrenders. Each year CHR assists dozens of horse owners by taking in their equine companions and finding new homes or offering short-term financial assistance. CHR has been instrumental in assisting during natural disasters, most recently in Boulder County after the devastating floods.

Who We Are

In operation for almost 30 years, CHR implements quality horse care to over 50 horses on a regular basis. We are one of only three horse rescues in Colorado that is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries for delivering the highest standards of care and program management. We also have gone under extensive financial review and are now a member of the Combined Federal Campaign. Services Provided: • Equine Crisis Assistance Program – CHR offers assistance to committed horse owners in the community who are temporarily struggling financially. We provide hay, veterinary assistance, and even supported the rebuild of equine facilities after the 2013 flood. For some families, this fund is the support they need to get through a difficult time and avoid having to surrender their horse. • Surrender Program – CHR is often a horse owner's last chance as they are faced with illness, foreclosure, divorce, natural disaster, or the inevitability of old age. CHR eases the pain by providing the peace in knowing that their beloved horse will have a second opportunity to find a loving home. CHR also, facilitates the surrender of horses referred by Animal Control due to owner neglect and abandonment. These horses receive the proper care they deserve and once healthy are provided training so that they may find a forever home. • Adoption Program – Through a thorough screening process, CHR adopts horses out to individuals in the community. Horses once overlooked and undervalued receive the love and care of a new family and home. Financially responsible individuals adopt horses and then purchase equine products and services, boosting the equine economy. Horses have the ability to improve one's quality of life resulting in a healthier, more productive citizen. • Educational Workshops – CHR offers regular on-site clinics such as; “So, You Want to Buy a Horse”, which teach individuals about the costs of owning a horse. CSU's top Veterinarians present lectures quarterly sharing the latest medical information. CHR Professional Trainers conduct Saturday clinics on best practices in horse handling. This provides horse owners the tools to manage these large animals which results in life-long partnerships. • Personal Tours – Children and adults are given hands-on learning experiences as they interact with different types of equine. Visits include personal attention from a staff member answering specific questions and the ability to observe all aspects of typical rescue operations. • Opportunities for Volunteerism – CHR has over 85 community volunteers who commit weekly to the mission of the Colorado Horse Rescue. Barn volunteers, riding volunteers, office volunteers, and volunteer board members all play an active role in promoting positive change in the community. • Sponsorship Program – Monthly donors sponsor a specific horse whereby they are able to spend time with their selected horse, receiving one-on-one instruction in equine safety and care.
