Our Mission

Hakone Foundation is a 401(c)(3) Non-Profit that operates and manages the historic Hakone Estate and Gardens in beautiful Saratoga, California.

Who We Are

Hakone Estate and Gardens is an authentic Japanese estate garden which was designed and built by Isabel and Oliver Stine after visiting the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, in 1915. Hakone Estate and Gardens was built to be used as a summer retreat for the Stines. Hakone was purchased by the city of Saratoga in 1966, and has been open to the public since. Hakone consists of four different gardens: Hill and Pond, Bamboo, Tea, and Dry Gardens. The Foundation is responsible for the maintenance of the gardens and facilities.
