High Plains Food Bank
Amarillo, Texas
Our Mission
The mission of the High Plains Food Bank is to alleviate hunger in the Texas Panhandle. We do this by serving as a distribution center for donated food products to 165 non profit agencies.
Who We Are
One in four children and one in six adults in the Texas Panhandle is food insecure - meaning that they are unsure whether or not they have enough food for themselves or their family. Over 60% of food is distributed to rural communities many of whom are food deserts with no adequate source of nutritional food. To alleviate this problem the Food Bank distributes food to non profit agencies that serve these communities. Towns without a food pantry receive food through a Mobile Delivery system.
The Food Bank also coordinates a Kids Cafe program where nutritional meals are prepared in kitchen and delivered and served at more than 25 sites that provide services to children.
The Garden is an outdoor classroom that is utilized to teach nutrition education to children and adults. Topics include home gardening, shopping for healthy food on the budget and food preparation.
