High Sierra Animal Rescue

Portola, California

Our Mission

High Sierra Animal Rescue (HSAR) is a no-kill shelter located in Portola, CA that is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless adoptable dogs that can no longer be held at the county shelter. We are a nonprofit organization focused on providing health, quality of life, and emotional stability for animals in Northern California and Northern Nevada.

Who We Are

High Sierra Animal Rescue (HSAR) was started in 1999, after the need of homeless pets in Plumas County was seen. Since the beginning, HSAR has found loving forever homes for more then 3,700 homeless pets. HSAR set a goal of making Plumas County no-kill of adoptable pets within five year of starting, and with the help of "Friends of the Animals" (Friends) and "Plumas Animal Welfare Society" (PAWS) the no-kill goal was met with three years. HSAR began a spay/neuter program for Plumas County residents to help control/maintain the pet population. HSAR also began a Humane Education program reaching out to the community teaching responsible pet ownership. HSAR has a unique wellness program that each dog is put through. It includes daily "quiet time", play yard leash work, dog massages and more. The program is intended to help each dog become adoptable and help them find their family quickly.
