Mangrove Action Project

Port Angeles, Washington

Our Mission

The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forests. These unique coastal ecosystems linking land and sea, play a vital role in helping to keep our planet healthy. Mangroves once sheltered three-quarters of tropical and subtropical shorelines. Today, only half remain.

Who We Are

Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the world's mangroves, the founders of MAP decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to address the loss of these coastal forests worldwide. By demonstrating the importance of mangrove forests through our programs, we are striving for a protected and restored coastline managed sustainably by local communities. Our approach involves (1) networking, (2) education, (3) advocacy, (4) conservation and restoration, as well as (5) sustainable community-based development tackling present day crises such as climate change and sea level rise. (1) MAP's small, US-based headquarters, provides administrative support and overall guidance for regional projects in the global South, while also providing four essential services to grassroots groups and proponents of mangrove conservation, including: a) Coordination of a unique international NGO network and information clearinghouse on mangrove forests; b) Promotion of public awareness of mangrove forest issues; c) Development of technical and financial support for local NGO projects in the global South; and, d) Publicize within the developed nations the basic needs and struggles of Southern coastal fishing and farming communities affected by the consumer demands of the wealthy nations. (2) We have a range of education models and programs for different people including, The Marvellous Mangrove (MM) Curriculum which is an award winning 300-page wetlands/environmental resource guide for schools in the tropics and subtropics. This innovative experiential approach has the goal of transforming society toward a positive attitude and respect for mangrove resources and uses, while preparing the next generation of decision makers. (3) The Question Your Shrimp (QYS) campaign is currently working to gather support from restaurants, chefs, retailers, and consumers who are pledging not to serve or buy unhealthy, imported shrimp. By raising awareness and changing consumer demand in the U.S. (currently, the #1 consumer of imported shrimp), the campaign strives to reduce mangrove deforestation and oppression of coastal communities overseas (4) Our award winning Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) model focuses on understanding the site and correcting the problems that caused the mangrove loss in the first place ensuring a more successful restoration. This well-considered model directly engages local community participation, resulting in successful, cost effective long-term protection of the restored sites. (5) All our on-site models and programs are designed to serve local communities, NGO's and their environment. Our range of workshops, resource centers and toolkits are all focused around sustainable methods of managing coastal ecosystems, ensuring a brighter future for everyone.
