Marshall Direct Fund

Marshall Direct Fund started in 2007. Just as George Marshall recognized the great need invest in war-weary people, we have an opportunity to invest in people who are in desperate need of education and economic opportunities so they can chose peace and prosperity over violence and despair. There are over 8 million school aged children in Pakistan not in school and women in the workforce rank second to last worldwide. Without education, critical thinking capabilities, and economic opportunities, impoverished youth and their families are susceptible not only to poverty but vulnerable to recruitment into extremist organizations. Education improves conditions of poverty, the health status of children, and the economic development of their communities. Statistics reveal that for every 1% increase in education there is a .3% increase in economic growth. All programs are run with dedicated and qualified local staff. MDF only operates in communities where they are invited and only with the acceptance of local elders. In the primary schools, boys are not allowed to enroll unless their sisters are enrolled first. Vocational training is conducted with women who have the support of their fathers, brothers and/or husbands in order to ensure buy-in and local support. MDF works with several local partners in some of the most vulnerable neighborhoods in terms of extremist and militant recruitment. Now more than ever, youth and women in Pakistan need access to safe and quality education. This project provides scholarships to youth and young women who would not otherwise have access to education and vocational training. We work with quality teachers and trainers and provide training on current teaching methodologies. MDF supplies books, school supplies, curriculum, training material and access to education and resources that cultivates skills, critical thinking, and results in greater earning potential.
