Meals On Wheels Of Tarrant County
Fort Worth, Texas
Our Mission
Providing services to the homebound elderly and disabled in Tarrant County focusing on nutrition, health, and independence
Who We Are
In 1972, representatives from eleven downtown Fort Worth churches met to discuss the problems in the central city. From this first meeting, the Association of Central City Ministries (ACCM) was formed. These churches were Broadway Baptist, Central Baptist, Greater St. James Baptist, Mt. Gilead Baptist, First Christian, First United Methodist, First Presbyterian, Gethsemane Presbyterian, St. Andrew's Episcopal, St. Patrick's Cathedral and Temple Beth-El. Their first concern was services to the elderly. ACCM made the commitment to bring food to the elderly in the central city area and on May 15, 1973 Meals On Wheels was begun, using all volunteer help. On that day 30 people received meals. Meals On Wheels owes a debt of gratitude to the members of ACCM and the many volunteers from these churches that worked so diligently to make Meals On Wheels a success. The program has grown rapidly each year since its inception and now serves close to 1 million meals each year to homebound residents of Tarrant County. The program has also grown to provide for unmet needs including breakfast meals, utility assistance, pet meals, diabetes intervention and education, etc.
