Who We Are

Animal Protection Association, Inc. d.b.a. Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services (MSNS) is a non-profit clinic offering affordable spay and neuter surgeries to pet owners in the Memphis area. The mission of MSNS is to reduce pet overpopulation through affordable spay and neuter surgeries, and ultimately, to help reduce unnecessary euthanasia of healthy pets. In addition to our standard low-cost procedures, we place a special emphasis on ensuring that low-income and senior citizens have the opportunity to use our services. The clinic also offers age-appropriate pet vaccinations and micro-chipping, which are done at time of surgery. We emphasize the benefit to the community at large and improving the quality of life of our region by caring for our pets in a humane way. Founded in 1978, the Animal Protection Association (APA) was originally formed to address the lack of legislation available for issues such as cruelty and neglect. Although the APA was instrumental in helping with legislation, enforcement was still a challenge, and the organization believed that addressing a root cause—animal overpopulation and its subsequent problems of neglect, cruelty, and euthanasia—should become its main focus. The original spay/neuter program was done in collaboration with the City of Memphis by using the Memphis Animal Services surgery room and staff to sterilize pets and feral cats. The APA moved the program out of the shelter due to financial hardships the city had fallen under. From there, MSNS contracted with over 20 veterinary clinics to provide spay and neuter surgeries while running a capital campaign and seeking grants to open the MSNS clinic, which became a reality in 2005. Since opening the clinic in its current location, MSNS has performed more than 33,000 spays and neuters, making an exponential impact on the pet overpopulation problem in the greater Memphis area.
