Our Mission

Oakland Kids First programming ensures that high schools are places where youth are empowered to use their civic leadership skills during the school day through academic peer mentoring and youth organizing to create a culture of peer support and mutual accountability that improves learning and achievement for all students.

Who We Are

Oakland Kids First runs three programs including: - Peers Advising Students to Succeed (PASS-2) academic mentoring program in five Oakland high schools, reaching 1,700 9th graders annually. - REAL HARD youth leadership after school program at three Oakland high schools, reaching 1,800 students through a Code of Respect campaign. -Meaningful Student and Family Engagement district and high school capacity building. Founded in 1996, OKF has trained thousands of high school-aged youth to implement school improvement projects that: won the adoption of the Meaningful Student Engagement Standards in OUSD in 2005; won an increase of dedicated city funding for youth services from 2.5% to 3.0% (an additional $2 million) in 2008; and won a Code of Respect policy at three high schools that established a set of shared values and reduced suspensions from 2013-15.
