RESCUE The children who reside at the OMO CHILD home in Jinka, Ethiopia were rescued by our founder, Lale Labuko or by others that were able to negotiate with the tribes to let the Mingi children live outside the tribe. When a child is determined to be Mingi, they are either left alone in the bush without food and water or are placed under house arrest and not allowed to have nourishment. This means certain death for the child if they are not rescued. Many times, rescued children are in need of costly medical attention and lengthy hospital stays when they first arrive. CARE + EDUCATE Living at the OMO CHILD home is the only option for rescued Mingi children, since they can't return to their village. Our children live together in a safe, clean home-like environment. They are loved and cared for by devoted nannies called “mamas” and other caretakers (nurse, cooks, and housekeepers). They are well fed, clothed, and educated, and all necessary medical care is provided. DEVELOP OMO CHILD is committed to providing the children with the best possible education, with the goal that they become future leaders and important contributors to society, working as teachers, nurses, doctors, engineers, etc. We also hope that our children, once grown, will help Lale & OMO CHILD in advocating for the end of Mingi. We believe that through education of the younger people of the Omo Valley tribes, Mingi will be ended.
