Our Mission

In 1999, Dr. Denis Mukwege founded the Panzi Hospital in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The region has been devastated by war and an epidemic of sexualized violence for twenty years. Today, the Panzi Hospital serves more than 400,000 constituents in the Ibanda Health Zone. The US based Panzi Foundation makes strategic investments at Panzi Hospital and Panzi Foundation DRC. We also develop and engage in strategic advocacy to end violence against women and girls in the DRC and around the world.

Who We Are

Panzi Foundation USA educates the public about the challenges in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, engages in strategic advocacy to end violence against women, and makes key investments at Panzi Hospital to heal women and restore lives. Dr. Denis Mukwege, 2014 Sakharov Prize Laureate, is the Chief Medical Director of Panzi Hospital, as well as President of the Panzi Foundation USA Board. Since 1999, Panzi Hospital has provided more than 40,000 women, 19,000 of whom are survivors of sexual violence, with its best-in-class, holistic model of care. This “whole-woman, whole-community” healing model provides patients with services that meet the full spectrum of their needs: physical recovery, emotional recovery, community reintegration and legal assistance. In addition, Panzi makes strategic investments in local, Congolese civil society organizations, building their capacity to continue the grassroots work that rebuilds Congolese communities on principles of human rights and partnership between men and women.
