Portland Fruit Tree Project
Portland, Oregon
Our Mission
Portland Fruit Tree Project’s mission is to increase equitable access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce.
Who We Are
Portland Fruit Tree Project (PFTP) was created in 2006 when two friends noticed large amounts of fruit going to waste, from trees throughout Portland. Acutely aware of the economic challenges that many in the community face in accessing healthful food, they began organizing neighbors to harvest this resource and make it available to people in need.
Today, PFTP is an award-winning nonprofit that cultivates community orchards on public lands, offers hands-on education in tree care and food preservation, and brings people together to harvest and distribute thousands of pounds of fresh fruit from hundreds of trees each year. By empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of urban fruit trees, PFTP prevents waste, builds community, and creates sustainable, cost-free ways to obtain healthful food.
Through our four unique and interrelated programs (Harvest Program, Community Orchards Program, Fruit Tree Stewardship Program, and Food Education Program) PFTP provides direct services that improve quality of life for people in Portland.
