The Community Kitchens of Birmingham

Birmingham, Alabama

Our Mission

Community Kitchens of Birmingham is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to feeding anyone who is hungry. Since 1980, Community Kitchens has served the hungry, homeless and working poor a warm and nutritious midday meal without regard to situation or condition. Those who are in need of a meal will find our doors open 365 days a year.

Who We Are

Our guests come from a variety of backgrounds including the unemployed, the homeless, the disabled, veterans, the working poor, families on welfare and the elderly on fixed income. A recent study by Feeding America states that 1 in 8 Americans are considered “food insecure”. Locally, 60% of our guests report that this is the only hot meal they will get all day and for 30% it is the only meal of any kind! Community Kitchens doors are open every day in Woodlawn and six days a week on Southside* to serve over 96,000 warm meals to our guests. These meals help nourish the body and spirit of those in need. While so many people in our community enjoy an abundance of good, wholesome food, there are also many others that go without. The most recent census figures for Jefferson County combined with Feeding America metrics indicate that there are over 100,000 people who are unsure of where they will get their next meal. In addition there are as many as 3,000 people each week who sleep on the streets of Birmingham.
