Our Mission

The family of Manuel S. Yatooma endured a devastating tragedy on March 11, 1993. Mr. Yatooma was shot twice in the head while interrupting a carjacking. In that instant, a young mother of four boys ranging 20 to 10 years old became a widow, four boys became one of the many fatherless boys, having lost a father to the violence in Detroit. And so it went: Rapid was the spiral from financial security to monetary chaos. Overnight his family went from relative wealth to threatened foreclosure, bankruptcy and dependence on social security. They desperately needed help. Unfortunately, there was no organization like this to provide the family with much-needed support. Now, we are able to assist those -trying to reassemble their lives in the wake of a similar family tragedy. The Yatooma Family wishes to grow this charity to help thousands and millions of other children and their families and bring honor to the legacy of their cherished husband and father, Manuel S. Yatooma. We cannot replace a lost parent. No one can. But, with your help, we are committed to doing all that we can for the kids.

Who We Are

Social Events Once a month, we gather together for a fun, family outing. This is a wonderful chance for families to gather and gain strength from one another, enjoy an outing out they might not otherwise afford--a chance for young widows and young widowers to be with people in their situation, grandparents to be with other grandparents who have lost a child and now find themselves in the role of parent again, and most importantly...... a chance to NOT be the only kid in the room who has said goodbye to Mom or Dad too soon. Practical Assistance The lawn needs mowing. The bathroom faucet is still leaking. The refrigerator is empty. The little things still need doing. Yatooma's Foundation For The Kids understands that while the family's life has changed, the process of daily activity must continue. We will not hesitate to cut the lawn, call a plumber or help with groceries so that a grieving family can instead focus on healing. This kind of everyday assistance is the most practical service that we provide. Professional Assistance Through assistance provided by professionals in finance, counseling, law, career planning, coaching and job placement, we make resources available to families that help them regain stability. Personal Assistance By providing counseling and support that is highly personalized to meet each family's unique set of needs, we help grieving kids and surviving parents make constructive choices and decisions as their lives continue. Our aim is to help each beneficiary make a successful transition from grief and instability to emotional, educational and financial stability.
