Skin Cancer

Skin cancer can be divided into two subcategories, melanoma and non-melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most common types of non-melanoma skin cancer — 90 percent of all skin cancers. Melanoma accounts for just 4 percent of all cases of skin cancer.¹ Globally, there were 232,000 new cases of skin cancer in 2012, however, non-melanoma skin cancers are not included in the majority of international data.² There are approximately two to three million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer and 132,000 cases of melanoma skin cancer each year worldwide.³ Australia has the highest rate of melanoma, with an average occurrence rate of 33.6 cases per 100,000 people. New Zealand has the second highest rate of melanoma, with 33.3 cases per 100,000 people, and Norway is next with 29.6 per 100,000 people.⁴
